Global Packaging Survey 2012–2013 New Consumer Technology Solutions - Impact, Opportunities and Budgets



Strong volatility in the global economy with slow growth in developed countries resulted in new hope of advancements in technology to suit current packaging trends in a cost-effective way in emerging countries. As the packaging industry plays a significant role in the global economy, development of new technology solutions within the industry will be an important guide for success in 2012–2013.

Of respondents across the industry, 59% consider ‘research and development’ and to be the core area for increased demand for new technology in packaging production. Additionally, regardless of region, ‘printing’, ‘in-process quality control’, and ‘research and development’ are considered critical production areas which are expected to have increased demand for new technology in 2012. According to the survey results, the top three key technology-based packaging approaches expected to have increased demand in 2012–2013 include ‘tamper-evident packaging’, ‘retail-ready packaging’, and ‘PET plastic packaging’.

The survey results also reveal that for packaging industry buyer respondents, the top three production areas expected to generate more demand for new technology include activities such as ‘printing’, ‘research and development’, and ‘labeling’.
